The proposal

Last year @Sunniva made a wonderful, thoughtful proposal about how to bring dogs safely to Kiez Burn 2022.

https://talk.kiezburn.org/d/D20BEOi4/-decision-dogs-at-kiez-burn-2021

This required owners to register their doggos before the event among other safety measures. Unfortunately multiple people ignored this process and brought their dogs anyway. This lead to many unsafe moments with dogs wondering around site without a leash.

Sadly someone was bitten in the face by one of the approved dogs.

This lead to much distruption and stress during the event. Worrying for the safety of the person bitten, the dog and other people at the burn. The owner and dog were asked to leave site and they did so without argument. The dog had to be kept inside a tent while this decision was being made.

At this stage 9 weeks before arriving on site (7 by the time this decision will be made) I would propose we make a decision now to not allow dogs.

I would be more than happy to see another person step up to take Dog Lead and put a rigid safety procedure in place for 2023. Failing this - I suggest that the answer is no. Seeing Sunniva's immense efforts but how people ignored them and how even that could not prevent a serious incident makes me see the importance of this process.

I suggest that this will prevent an incident leading to having to have a dog put down - which I would argue was only narrowly missed last year.

Edit: Correction from @Sunniva -

"Absolutely no dogs were in any danger of being put down as a result of the incident that took place during the event last year. German laws state that dogs with a violent history will have doggy criminal records, and if the dogs have several violent acts on record, it may be taken away from its owners. Only in very severe cases with particularly aggressive animals, the local authorities may have the right to seize and euthanize the animal (source). This is as far as can be from the case with the incident in question. I ask everyone to please refrain from exaggerating the severity of last year's dog incident, and to avoid adding redundant concerns to the inevitable rumours and talk about what happened."

Jasmine and I would very much like to avoid the loss of dog lives. (Kimura too)

I hope that it is clear that I am not anti-dog. I have many treasured dog friendships and feel that their needs and safety need to be taken seriously.

How and by who would the proposal be implemented

  • Share the decision on information channels and to all ticket holders

  • The gate to tell people who show up with a dog that they cannot come on site

  • Site Lead and Rangers to enforce this with support

When would this proposal be implemented

Happy to write the information with Communicorns for the social channels and with Robots for ticket holders ASAP after decision. Happy to take personal responsibility for handling folks who argue about this decision on site.

I think this decision needs to be made and communicated soon to allow dog owners to plan ahead.

What are the advantages of this proposal

  • Protecting Site Leads, Rangers, Welfare and First Aid from dealing with possibly emergencies on site

  • Protecting attendees from possible danger and uncertainty around the friendly-ness of dogs they see

    Edit: addition from @Cris -

  • avoiding stress for participants, who dislike/are afraid of dogs (since the mere fact of stressing out when seeing a dog around, was a recurrent comment during the first dogs AP

What are the disadvantages of this proposal

  • People upset that they cannot bring their dog onsite during Kiez Burn

    Edit: addition from @Cris -

  • arranging a dog alternative care and stay during KB, is more than upsetting, but a potentially complicated hassle and expensive thing

Decision

I suggest that no dogs are allowed on site during Kiez Burn 2023. Including during build and strike. I suggest this be enforced at Gate, Site Leads and Rangers during the event.

Thank you for reading! Much love from Khan-Do and Princess Jasmine x
