2020 [Meeting] DreamGuiding Kiez Burn KickOff Meeting

S Saskia Public Seen by 115

Why we meet:

This is the first meeting to kick off the Dreams process in 2020. @Saskia (The Fuzzy Facilitator) acts as a guide for the realizers of the Dream Process 2020.

Dream guides are the people working in the background to enable artists to make their dreams reality. Dream Guides review the dreams coming in, get in touch with the dreamers & answer questions. But most importantly: Dream guides get to work with an amazing team to shape the future of the Dreams Process 2020.

Ideal results:

  1. At the end of the meeting, a realizer/lead for the dreams process as well as a couple of first dream guides have been found.

  2. The new dream guides have a rough idea about their tasks and next steps

  3. At the end of the meeting, the group has a rough idea about the issues that we aim to tackle in 2020

Meeting notes

Dream Guides Meeting 11th February 20

Introduction Round

-       Saskia, moderator, would like to be in a dream-guide coordination position

-       Vlad, artwork was part of dreams last year, might take role of dream guide, has some input

-       Flo, software engineer, part of burner tech weekend and working on improving dreams platform

-       Mareike, dream guiding last year and brought a dream, wants to work on improving this years process and maybe dream guide again. Notekeeper

-       Daisy, did a crowdfunding for opening ceremony and wants to support artists

-       Waldo, leading art granting in first years and leading the implementation of Dreams Platform with Hendrik, involved in redistribution process and wants to improve process this year

-       Keegan, via Zoom, new to KiezBurn, wants to help out with dreams

-       Rob, via Zoom, knowledge in Audio and wants to see how to fit in

-       Benjamin, came later, brought artworks to BM and many other burns, has put up a proposal about having an art department selecting 2-3 big artworks

How we work together

-       Consensual do-ocracy

-       The advice process

-       Updates: lifting focus to in person meetings again and more clarity on when board or leads can “block” decisions. We are practicing – not a perfect system yet.

-       Platforms

-       Loomio/Talk: used for advice process, use as Wiki, its not a democracy (polls are used to gather information, not for binding decisions).

-       Dreams Platform: new since 2018, no art committee anymore (big burden, lack of transparency, who gets on the team?), high participation, more workshops and smaller projects, collaboration between camps and art

-       Realities: responsibilities manager, maps needs, connects guides and realizers

-       What is a dream guide: work together with dreamers, answer questions, remind, check-in, help with refund process. Giving advice in communication with other dream guides.

-       Other Dream Guides tasks: shape dreams process 2020, write manual for dreamers, info materials (tutorials?), communication with dependencies and cooperation with tech team to develop platform, find dreamguides for dreamers

Whats new on the Dreams Platform:

-       Monsters: outsource responsibilities of dreamguides to community à raising a monster if a Dream is not aligned with guidelines (Dream Guides: decide on what the monsters stand for e.g. fire safety, alcohol), monsters can go “back to sleep” if proposal is adjusted

à comment: Radical change of process. Feels like a loss of ownership, can raise big, constant discussions. Do we then still need Dreamguides? Is this good or bad?

à Might be good to have more people check on a project than just one person who can miss things

-       Dream budged overview is visible (not in an Excel Sheet) à only one form to fill in

à Question: Why make budget public? Will it not invite conflict? Waldo: Transparancy. Person who votes can get more clarity on where money goes to. Artists can collaborate on materials, can give advice to less experienced artists to improve budget.

-       Dream Crew is visible on the dreams site and can edit the Dream

Themenspeicher/Questions:

à Borderland had higher participation through implementing this monster idea. Do we want to make use of this?

à Does budget need to be public? What do we do if discussions happens?

Requiem

-       Issues of dreamers: Long manual to read through, extensive refund process (cannot be changed due to bureaucratic reasons, but we can support more), lack of dream guides or not pro-active dream guides, dreamguides not picking up new projects, dreams process requires skills in writing etc.

-       Issues seen by Dream Guides: Hard to tell someone “no”, artists sometimes hard to reach, dreamers behaving rude sometimes

-       Wishes of community: Categorization à hard to find what you want to support. Idea of signage for dreams e.g. Temple, Effigy, Camp, … , Environmental impact of projects

-       Issues regarding outcome: What is funded and what is not? Bias for projects just under the funding, “non-art” projects like camps, gifting, tools, infrastructure projects

-       Token redistribution process: not handled in the beginning, was very messy and intense.

-       Not enough playa worthy big art! à à à à à

Benjamin

-       not necessarily BIG art, but create a system that artists want to use to bring their art

-       not going to bring art to KB due to intense Dreamsplatform process, but wants to support other artists

-       Proposal: Create “Art Department” which decides on artworks and supports Dreamers from start to end. 3-5 Artworks, budget has to be figured out. Can run next to Dreams Platform. People in Art Department can just volunteer, first come first serve.

Discussion:

-       Benjamin’s status atm: not clear how to proceed. Community has been asked, poll shows people are in favour of an art department (18pro, 9con, 4unsure), wants to continue implementing art department but his announcement on facebook has not been approved.

à comment: poll is just a way to get feedback, not binding. Very few people took part. How can we find a way to take the different suggestions into the proposal? Update proposal (for example the budget), include questions raised like who will get on the art department and how and why?

à because it is about money, leads/event coordination team has blocking power

à can we get more into detail about proposal, have a round table (with everyone directly affected and wanting to have a say) and talk about it and then take decision as soon as possible.

à can we in this room even take this decision now?

à Make case to finance department first about how much money there is

-       Vlad proposal: create art department, select three projects and promote to community and attach a crowdfunding link for people to give extra money outside of dreams.

-       Comment: But if I don’t want to adjust my proposal, but only go for what I suggested – then if you propose something different, you have to take the lead in making it happen à does this scare people off from participating in the discussion and making other proposals?

-       Art department can also serve as an “artistic support” for newer artists. Can be a huge opportunity.

Circle of opinions:

-       Good proposal but needs polishing, as well as process

-       Take the time to include feedback and propose adjusted proposal. How we make the decision is what we are figuring out right now. No one knows the answer.

-       Wants to share the transformative experience of bringing big art and being supported but is more interested in the process.

-       Challenging and interesting how we work on improving this process. Good how proposal has been brought forward. Split between both dreams and art department. We need opinion (not necessarily consent) of people directly affected and make it visible how advice has been taken into account. Transparency!

-       Confusing process. Learning by doing atm and now we need to formalize it. Appreciate initiatives like Benjamins. Big potentials! Good to have dream guides for setup, power etc. Last years process was good for pushing Kieze, this year we need to push art. We need to find a process that people are okay with.

-       Does not see transparency as a real issue. Get a view on how a process happens – maybe actually livestream it! Proposal was asking if people want art and they wanted it. Raising his hand to stand up for his proposal but does not care too much about the process. Goal is to bring art, that’s it.

à Proposal: Meeting about Benjamins (adjusted) Proposal with all people who want to participate. Check in with finance first about budget. Then vote??

Vlad proposal:

-       Dream Vesting: Tokens can already be spent now but only get “real” once tickets are bought.

-       Dreamers can already get an idea about their funding.

-       People can even give tokens towards the art department (?)

-       Moving forward with dreams without having a ticket sale yet

-       Technically possible

à Saskia opens a Dreamer Talk group for further discussion
