2020 Setting up Dreams platform + process

P Purzel Public Seen by 145

At the kick off meeting we did some group work on how to improve the Dreamer process compared to the experience from last year. This thread is just to share the protocoll from this process to the future Art grant organisers. :) Feel free to change everything in this thread, while we move forward in organising :*

Background info

  • old dreams: dreams.2019.kiezburn.org

  • clean dreams platform: dreams.kiezburn.org

Why Dreams platform

  • It did away with an art grant committee, which had these issues:

    • it was a secret decision that people felt disconnected from (lack of transparency)

    • There was a lot of burden on the central organization to facilitate these discussions, which were often contentious (who gets to be on that team?) and caused friction within the community

  • participation & community: people engaged more with art & budget discussions (62% participation rate in voting!)

  • inclusion: there were more projects and a lot of smaller workshops that happened

  • co-operation: there was more collaboration between camps & art + it also made the whole Kiez Burn backend go much smoother in collaborating with power, placement, finance,...

Why it matters

The Dream process lead(s) will in large part decide the color of the event. How do you design the rules so that a nice balance between art installations/big art/camps/sound/experiences/workshops/... is achieved, is something that gets baked into the Dreams process.

For example, last year's Dreams process had the following implications:

  • we did not see a lot of big art funded due to the inherent structure of Dreams (a 10€ dream gets the same visibility as a 600€ dream)

  • camps get a lot of advantages, particularly big sound camps

  • Infrastructure projects: people did not realize these projects already got minimum funding

  • Energy-draining discussions on token redistribution

  • Dream budgets were separate instead of on the platform (people had to provide a spreadsheet, that was impractical, would be better to have that budget on Dreams, so participants can also check out what it is being spent on)

data: token redistribution discussion

A future lead of the Dreams process, could make some serious changes to address some of the concerns, or choose to leave it as is... :)

How we did it last year

  1. we organized a Design-thinking day, here is the documentation

  2. we had Dream leads that evolved from that process

  3. They started making Dream manuals and we finalized the tech part of it.

  4. much more happened, the event, then refunds and stuff

More documentation:

Some ideas

  • How could the Dreams platform facilitate all of the above, while favoring more art? (e.g. separate tokens for the categories, different sorting on the platform, providing ticket holders more transparency on what is Kiez, what is art, what is infrastructure,...)

  • How could we have a (parallel) process of allocating more funding towards big art in a transparent and inclusive process? This could take the form of:

    • an "art" general assembly with online access where everyone can vote to allocate a certain amount of €€ to certain projects

    • Allowing art to be be uploaded to the Dreams platform now and allowing everyone to vote for art (e.g. everyone who had a ticket in 2019, everyone who registers somewhere, people who buy a 2020 ticket through a ticket sale that happens in February,...)

  • Divide Dreams into categories, like Art, Structures, Camps,..

  • Divide the tokens into these categories, so everyone gets some tokens just for structures/art/etc. The point being no one needs to decide between having nice toilets or amazing art.

  • Having strict deadlines, including a period to submit the dreams with the intention of having all the dreams online at the same time.

Great!
Our learning from last year was that we want to have a better planned out process that ties in neatly with ticket sales (requiring a bit of tech as well). We were a bit late with things last year. Setting all of those processes up, is not so easy.

I would be happy to moderate a design-thinking workshop with people who are eager to co-create Dreams this year (like we did last year). If someone takes the lead, happy to contribute.

Dear Dream-Team: some brainstormed thoughts about Dreams that came up during the workshop on Jan 19, and that I've seen in the art threat here as well. (Excuse me if you already have this in mind and/or I'm patronizing 🐣)

  • thank you!

Could we try and link things a bit so that nothing gets lost/left behind?

  1. Could we please reference this important convo here:

https://talk.kiezburn.org/d/uNIpriwg/let-s-make-sure-there-is-art-at-kiezburn-this-year

2 Oooh, where is the "temporary dreamers" thread gone? I can't find it anymore....?

3. I'd like to ask the author of the document @Purzel if the part called "How we did it last year" should include the post mortem at this stage, not references like 4. much more happened, the event, then refunds and stuff (not clear???)

Added some learnings and background info to the thread and included Cris' suggestions + Alina's idea to reference the post on big art.

I'm not sure where to post this, but people currently involved in Dreams would be effected by this proposal and I need feedback from them. Please Tag if you know who should be seeing this

There will be a dreams guide documentation indeed. Very soon.(a week perhaps.)
We are waiting for the response from the group of ppl that did dreams guiding 2019.

Now, how are they organizing themselves to complete the doc (drive) and send this information to us? i dont know.
Our job is exclusively to have documented the procedures and learnings from 2019 but its not to plan towards 2020

If you are interested on the 2020 planning i suggest you contact any of the Dream guides 2019 if they wanna do it again this year cause im not really in the know on how that would be..... or even call Upon a meeting for the ones interested?
