Should We Suspend KB Leadership Training?

RS Remy Schneider Public Seen by 29

DECISION: Kiez Burn Leadership Training Suspended

We appreciate everyone who gave their input on the Talk Thread regarding the Kiez Burn Leadership Training - given the responses we are suspending the program

Of the 26 people who are taking part in the program, the results are as follows on the question “Should we CONTINUE the Leadership Training”:

  • 4 people did not view the thread

  • 9 people viewed the thread but did not voice an opinion

  • 9 people voted an ENTHUSIASTIC YES (two of these are your facilitators)

  • 4 people voted with Maybe/Neutral or No

To continue the program we would have liked an Enthusiastic Yes from 50% of the Leadership Training participants, which would have been 13 individuals. The response rate therefore sends a clear message to suspend the leadership program at this point. We talked a lot during the last sessions about responsibility - being able to respond - and that leadership means showing up and being there, even in difficult times. We don’t see that this group is able to respond right now and hold the space needed for growth. Without a majority input to continue the training, it does not seem worthwhile to put in the resources to rework the training program for a handful of people.

We are very grateful to all those who have participated thus far in the Leadership Program, and view the retreat weekend as a success. In case you would like to continue with your coaching circles, we would encourage you to do so, or to clearly dissolve the coaching circle so it’s transparent to all members of your group.

It is our hope that the Leadership Training continues on next year with a new group, and we will provide feedback to whomever decides to carry this on how to make the coaching circles and continued training more successful.

We hope you stay healthy,

Remy & Franzi

ORIGINAL POST FOR TRANSPARENCY

Should We Suspend the Leadership Training? Searching for Feedback - 50% Input Request.

Franzi and Remy are requesting feedback about continuing the Leadership Training

Although Kiez Burn has been postponed, the Leadership Training was started and remains as a personal journey for ourselves and not for Kiez Burn. We can still see our visions coming true even though we are facing new and ever-growing challenges.

In order for us to continue the leadership training, we will need to modify our original schedule to fit appropriate online formats. We would most likely do this via Zoom.

Currently there is the feeling that people are less engaged with continuing the Leadership training - and are having a hard time finding space for the program as they adjust to a new (and hopefully temporary) online reality. Moving the leadership training out of the in-person physical space and into an online forum is different from what we all signed up for --> therefore we want to do this check-in to see how everyone is feeling about continuing the program.

We'd like an enthusiastic YES to continue the program

Franzi and Remy (we) will work to modify the original program to be facilitated online. However, we would like an enthusiastic YES from a minimum of 50% of this group in order to put the time/energy into modifying and continuing the program. We will of course meet again in person once it has been deemed safe to do so.

Original program for reference:

  • 28 March - Session II: How to run really good offline meetings?

  • 19 April - Session III: Engaging Volunteers

  • 6 May- Session IV: (ONLINE) Building Digital Communities with Hugi

  • TBD - Session V: Final closing of training + Community Dinner

  • Every 2-3 Week Cadence: Coaching Circles

To continue the program we would have liked an Enthusiastic Yes from 50% of the Leadership Training participants, which would have been 13 individuals. The response rate therefore sends a clear message to suspend the leadership program at this point.

  • 9 people viewed the thread but did not voice an opinion

  • 9 people voted an ENTHUSIASTIC YES (two of these are your facilitators)

  • 4 people voted with Maybe/Neutral or No

As above - we are looking for at least 50% of Leadership participants to give an enthusiastic YES in order to continue and modify the KB Leadership Training. Please respond by the end of day Wednesday 25 March in order for the training to continue.

For me it doesn't make sense to continue - my goals that we were tracking and working towards were all connected to Kiez Burn actually happening, and without this work taking place I'm not sure there's a point in continuing the leadership training for now... i think it makes more sense to pick this back up when we know how and at what point we continue with Kiez Burn!

YES! I don't see a reason to stop, personally see this as positive driver in uncertain times. PLUS I really loved the idea of having an ONLINE session called "how to have really great OFFLINE meetings" :D Also happy to help if there is anything I can do. Have tiiiiiiiiiiime.......

Maybe/Neutral

I am rather tentative on this. I feel there is less practicing on leadership happening now, given that we are suspending all activities until further notice. Therefore, there is less/no learning that we can reflect on. I have the feeling the meetings we are having now, serve a different purpose: connecting & dreaming of new initiatives.

Hi there! I'm torn back and forth. On the one hand I'd strongly prefer to do this kind of work with you in person. On the other hand it seems to be exactly what we have to learn at the moment - to go through such a process in an online remote fashion. I decided to take it as it is. So, yes!

Enthusiastic YES

I am definitely in favor of continuing - and happy that so far people seem like they want to remain engaged. Right now we are missing about 4 more people voting YES in order for us to proceed with the training, so fingers crossed some folks check their mail tonight.

A short note about the Closing Dinner. Nirgendwo said we could do it there in May - before the whole craziness started. Now it is obviously on hold. But I think this could still happen at a later time. I feel like we might need sth like this, even if our goals have changed..

Would be kinda ironic making the next meeting how to do really good offline meeting online. For me its a maybe. For me it was about making precom happen, and while we still plan to make a Burn Night at a later date(maybe already as a decom or really late precom) i also have private stuff to deal with, so im not in a headspace this weekend to continue on a productive level. I wont be in the way of people who want it to happen online which is why i put down maybe and will tune in probably. But like everyone else my head will be somewhere else.

SUPER YES!

When would be a better time to improve and deepen our leadership skills than now? To show up with and for the community to support in these hard times?

Now is the time to shake your Magic Stick and remember your WHY.

This is why we did the Leadership Training for. To be accountable leaders when it is hard not only when it's certain.

I strongly feel we should keep doing this and even create a way of sharing this with others

Yes! For me there is no reason not to continue. there will be another burn sometime and we should get on with community building.

I feel it'd be a waste of the time and energy we've spent so far to stop it now, since I certainly see it unclear how, with whom, in which format and when it may continue. Besides, I see the interesting challenge of adapting it to the new situation.

Moreover, besides some of my KB projects are still on (because they are not so KB'20-dependant) I never saw this program as a mean to achieve a particular goal, but more of a personal skill to adquire for the future, put into practice with a specific matter this year. So the fact that those goals are different shouldn't in my opinion, affect the training.

All this rationalitismus being said, I'll just add that personally, I'm still adapting to the new situation and (happily) with enough work atm, so even though my yes is an enthusiastic one, I wont have that much time in the next week or so. This will aber change in the future.

Thank you @Franzi and @Remy Schneider ❤️ I am taking a way so much from the training.

Daisy Fri 27 Mar 2020 9:49AM

Thank you Franzi,Remy and those who had the accountability to respond and show up.

I feel extremely disappointed on the people who saw this and decided not to vote. I think it's a lack of respect and courage. Selfish. Why the fuck would you act in such way to a community that you love? To the hard work of Remy and Franzi? To a space where YOU where selected to be a leader?

I feel sad and frustrated about the cancelation, because I think that what we lack in the current times are examples of leadership. Of accountability and reliability. What we are showing now is the opposite of that. Ghosting. Quitting. Not being flexible. Giving up.

Yes, life changes and it's uncertain. It has always been like that, and it will always be like that. Why is everyone so surprised now? It seems to me that many are running with their tail between their legs full of fear and selfishness.

We can create the leadership, reliability and peace in our inner selves. Consciously choosing how to feed and nurture our interdependence

I understand that integrating the current changes is hard. That a lot of us are heartbroken, anxious, stressed, fearful.... but there are others that are choosing to experience this from a place of love, courage, determination, flexibility and perseverance. It is possible. It is needed in order to co-create the community and world we want to live.
It is hard and uncomfortable at times, but thats why resilience is fundamental and why we had a day dedicated to that. And there is support and ways to deal with this better.

But hiding? Being flaky?

i want to make an appeal to this decision, so that the Leadership Training can continue. Maybe it's with 7 people and we regroup, but those 7 will have more commitment and will than the rest.

I offer to take the lead in this, talk to Gustav,Franzi and Remy to build a new way up this mountain. I won't accept defeated by a temporal roadblock.

While I think some of this is a bit too negative/accusatory, I agree with the underlying idea. This is what it’s all about. Finding the courage to adapt, to restructure, to refocus. And if one person has the courage to do so, others will follow. Thanks @Daisy for taking that first step.

Hey there @Daisy - I wanted to share some thoughts:

I feel we had a really amazing Kiez Burn Leadership Retreat (e.g., the weekend offsite) - and that it was well worth the investment and continuation into the future.

What started this whole discussion had to do with the transition that lots of people are going through with the new isolated situation and the lack of response we were getting from members of the training. To revamp our program, Franzi and I would have needed to put in a lot of new effort - very willingly given - if there had been enough enthusiasm for continuing (hence the "enthusiastic YES").

The question is - how do we inspire ourselves and other leaders of Kiez Burn to stay active and involved. The current status quo was giving us a "feeling" like the digital side was not cutting it for "leadership training" - and the responses we got confirmed this. In my mind I think "OK cool, so what can we do instead? Let's adapt". It doesn't mean more things aren't in our future- and I hope they are much more inspiring for what is happening HERE and NOW - Immediacy demands that we don't hang on to something we "thought" would be -- what can we create instead? Our current view on the training was not inspiring enough participants when it wasn't in person - yea, that's fine and no problem.

Our community is still here and we will still find a way to adapt :) It might just not be as we had envisioned it several months before the current reality that we now face.

Yes. I'm disappointed by the outcome. I was thinking of posting something here, maybe not quite as sharp, but close. But then decided not to. I know it's a hard time for a lot of us right now, for some it all abruptly stands still, some work double the amount of usual. Emotionally, this unprecedented thing that we are suddenly living, is very taxing.

I can fully understand a "no" vote and a divided "maybe".

I don't know if Talk "view" counter is something that can be taken as a reference point to make a decision. If the email we all got was also not responded to, instead, perhaps?

But yes, I would have loved a 4 more YES. I'm curious what was behind abstaining to voice anything and choosing silence?

I hope everyone is coping. Alles wird gut <3
