The proposal
Background
The Kiez Burn Facebook group was initially founded as a public group so the group would be easily found for those with an interest in Kiez Burn. In 2022 Facebook made the change that posts in public groups are now readable by anyone, even if they are not part of the group or even if they are not logged into Facebook.
The proposal
We want to change the group to be private rather than public.
Positive:

only people part of the group can read group posts. We believe this will help engagement with people feeling safer in the space. Active Facebook group members have received undesired attention with their activity in the Facebook group. Examples:
Stalking: A stalker was able to see all Kiez Burn posts posted by their target
people using bot crawling to find work, contacting Kiez Burn people posting developer-oriented content in the Kiez Burn group.
More control over who joins / less fake profiles
"Drawbacks":
less reach & impact / lower growth
This change cannot be undone (make the private group public again later)

Agree! I think that making it a private group won't exclude people who do want to join and actively engage, so I don't see any negative there. Sounds like a great idea to me!

Love this proposal. I even believe one of our "Drawbacks" is another plus argument. You mention less reach & impact / lower growth if the Facebook group isn't public. I'd argue that it's not our task to reach nor grow via Facebook. We often worry about the growth of Kiez Burn and newbies not understanding the principles. But why do we always think about complete newbies when we think of growth - when we could be growing through experienced burners from other burns doing more "outreach" in the international and european burn scene. Interested seeking newbies will always find the burner scene - but complete randos just looking for the next festival-high might overlook our experiemnt when we're not as "obvious" on Facebook.
